Force Gurkha : The automotive landscape in India is about to get a fresh twist as Force Motors unveils its completely revamped Gurkha, aiming to take direct aim at the popular Mahindra Thar in the fiercely competitive off-road SUV segment.
This robust four-wheeler brings with it genuine off-road credentials, striking design, and a host of features tailored specifically for adventure seekers, who often find their choices limited in this niche market.
The new Force Gurkha clearly communicates its mission with a practical design that emphasizes functionality while showcasing a distinct visual flair.
Its boxy shape is accentuated by circular LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights (DRLs), and a factory-fitted snorkel air intake, complemented by bold “GURKHA” lettering prominently displayed on the front grille – making its identity unmistakable.
In contrast to urban-centric SUVs that merely flirt with off-road capabilities, the Gurkha is equipped right from the factory with robust off-road gear: high-profile all-terrain tires, impressive 215mm of ground clearance, and short overhangs, providing approach and departure angles of 37 and 33 degrees, respectively.
With a water wading capacity of a remarkable 700mm, this vehicle easily handles river crossings that could leave lesser SUVs stranded.
“Our goal was to create a vehicle that stands as a true off-roader above all else,” shares Prasan Firodia, Managing Director of Force Motors.
“While the new Gurkha offers enhanced comfort compared to its predecessors, we firmly adhered to the essential capabilities that adventure lovers seek.”
Force Gurkha Mechanical Credentials
Beneath its rugged exterior, the Gurkha is powered by a robust 2.6-liter diesel engine, derived from Mercedes-Benz technology, generating 91 horsepower and a commendable 250 Nm of torque, all connected to a 5-speed manual transmission.
While these specifications may appear modest next to more road-oriented SUVs, the engine shines in delivering torque at lower RPMs—precisely where it counts during tricky off-road situations.
The equipped four-wheel-drive system features selectable 4×4 with a low-range transfer case and manually locking front and rear differentials, components that are typically found in much pricier vehicles.
This arrangement bestows the Gurkha with the true grit needed to tackle challenging terrains, ranging from slippery inclines to rock crawling adventures.
For suspension, it utilizes an independent double-wishbone setup at the front paired with a rigid axle and coil springs at the rear—offering a favorable blend of articulation and comfort for on-road cruising.
Completing the tech package are stability control and hill descent control features, designed to assist the driver rather than take full command.
Force Gurkha Utilitarian Yet Comfortable Interior
Stepping inside, the Gurkha welcomes passengers with a practical design complemented by an unexpected level of comfort.
The cabin is adorned with four captain’s chairs, providing a comfortable seating arrangement for everyone on board.
The newly designed dashboard incorporates a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, while retaining physical buttons for critical controls—an invaluable feature when maneuvering with muddy hands.
Additional interior features include tilt and telescopic steering adjustment, power windows, central locking, and air conditioning.
On the safety front, the Gurkha comes equipped with dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors, and three-point seatbelts for all seats.
Off-road enthusiast Vishnu Mathur, who took part in the media drive, noted: “The interior design feels thoroughly considered for its intended purpose.
It’s not luxurious, but certainly comfortable enough for lengthy travel to isolated spots, and the materials appear robust enough to withstand mud, dust, and general wear and tear.”
Force Gurkha Market Positioning
With a starting price of ₹13.59 lakh (ex-showroom), the Gurkha positions itself not as a mass-market option, but as a specialized vehicle tailored for adventure lovers.
This places it head to head with the Mahindra Thar, a vehicle that has gained immense popularity following its comprehensive overhaul in 2020.
Initially, Force Motors is launching the Gurkha in one fully-loaded variant, which comes in five vibrant colors: Copper Red, Orange, Green, Grey, and White.
Future developments are in the pipeline, including three-door and five-door variants with varying wheelbase options.
Industry analyst Pratap Singh remarks: “The off-road SUV segment is relatively new in India, but it holds tremendous growth potential.
The Thar has demonstrated that there is a considerable demand for genuine off-road vehicles that are accessible in pricing. The Gurkha’s introduction provides consumers with a credible alternative, complete with its own unique personality.”
Force Gurkha Dealer Network and Ownership Experience
To support the Gurkha’s introduction, Force Motors has bolstered its dealership network, now featuring 35 outlets in major cities and popular off-roading locales.
The company also provides a standard warranty of 3 years/150,000 km, with service intervals set every 10,000 kilometers.
For the expanding community of Indian off-road fans, the arrival of the Gurkha marks a significant addition to an arena that was previously dominated by just one key player.
While it remains to be seen if it can rival the Thar’s impressive market performance, its authentic off-road capabilities ensure it will be taken seriously by enthusiasts and competitors alike.
